Northern Ireland Murals

In Northern Ireland, people express their creativity in a big way. There are perhaps as many as 2,000 murals in this area alone and most of them have been created since the 1970s. These murals tell a story about Ireland. They commemorate the history and culture of the area, with many of them showing fighting, asking for peace, and even the 1981 Irish Hunger Strike is depicted. These murals are preserved in a lot of different cases, though there are some that have suffered from neglect.

In some areas of Ireland, schools even take part in the creation of murals. They may have students create a drawing that they feel should be a mural or they may encourage the students to come together to create a mural around the school.
